Sonic the Hedgehog 247

The actual reboot continuity hasn’t happened yet, but this is the last time we see this version of the universe, so I’ll be writing my thoughts on pre-reboot Archie Sonic here.

– What an insane ride this comic was. It covered so many spectrums and tones and genres across its lifetime. Even when it was bad, it was always fascinatingly bad. I read it all and I don’t regret it.

– It’s obvious and generally agreed on that Flynn’s run on the comic was by far the best part of it, and I agree. One-note characters from the series’ past were given new life and greatly expanded on and improved. The Destructix? The Iron Dominion? Monkey Khan? Scourge? Mammoth Mogul? They went from whatever to amazing during this run. I can’t overstate enough how much I loved it. There were some dips, but the only truly bad parts were right at the start when Flynn was still cleaning up the messes past writers made, and right at the end when Penders’ lawsuit was heavily restricting what he had to write. Everything else? Pure gold. I really hope that in the future SEGA of Japan loosens the iron grip they have on how Sonic has to be written and we can get something this wild and emotional again.

– This is a very dark continuity, which you can see at least as early as Endgame. Death, horror, dystopia, genuine devastating losses for the heroes, real darkest hour stuff. Surprising, right? Sonic games and the IDW comics can sometimes approach this level, but they never get there. It’s incredible and does a lot for every character involved. It’s part of why this is one of my favorite Sonic stories.

– The Freedom Fighters need to come back, seriously. Bunnie, Antoine, Sally, Rotor, Chuck, everyone. Just in some capacity, if not as recurring game characters. Please.
