Mecha Sonic was a boss in sonic advance he was in the blue sphere secret in sonic and knuckles he was a another boss so i think he was the predecessor of Metal SOnic
He was also a boss in Sonic & Knuckles
I feel like Mecha sonic did not actually want to seem like the bad guy, he was just going through some trauma. It happens.
