They weren’t even introduced into the games when this story was written. Even if they had been they were off limits for mainline archie until around 2007 or so, a good long while after this plotline had wrapped up.
It’s also an alternate timeline so in universe the explanation is they just didn’t get born in this timeline and their existence was one of the factors that lead to events playing out differently.
