Summary
Starting with issue 160, the comic book series had a new head writer: Ian Flynn, a devoted fan who has seized upon the dream of creating stories about the blue hedgehog officialy. The personalities of the characters are finally becoming more and more similar to their videogame counterparts, and the comic book universe carefully adapts the details of the lore from the video games.

Confession:I thought Geoffrey was being a double agent again. Since the moment he took the Chaos Emerald and giving it to his “master”, I thought he was playing them like he did with Eggman when we first meet him. I kept saying “fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me”, so I was giving him the benefit of the doubt. But after seeing him look at Sonic and Sally like that, and the darkness radiating off of him…I don’t think he’s playing. I think he really is turning to the dark side to his, apparently real, form magic master! And then I had a terrifying thought: Where is Hershey? Sonic asked him before and St. John said she was deep undercover so we wouldn’t be seeing her for a long while. But now, I’m really worried he did something. Unless she was…oh no. What if…oh geez! No! Do not tell me! Oh Geoffrey! This isn’t the way to go!

This comic showed me sonic doesn’t always make the right moves. Like CMON how do you fail to save someone twice???? But it’s okay sally will be back to normal and will return to active duty field soon…or will she? Also this makes me think if sega got the idea of creating sonic generations while writing with the archie team.
Rip sally man I almost thought sonic was a failure. Also sally looked really scared during that kiss(if you look at her lip at the bottom). And man, eggman was so cruel during that shot I almost cried. Just wow. It feels different losing an important character. Mobian kisses are different these days. But most of all, awsome issue(W SILVER SONIC IS BACK)!

Steven Butler’s art has improved tremendously! It was already pretty solid — in the Adventure era, I generally preferred his work over Ron Lim’s; J Axer’s stuff was super detailed & dynamic, but the ladies felt a bit TOO sexualized/curvy; Butler’s was arguably closest to the games, but it still had things I didn’t like — the gals were still far curvier for no reason, the guys were super lanky, and so on.
This arc, there’s quite a bit of parity between this & Yardley’s stuff (helped by Herm’s still-excellent coloring to help unify the differences). Sally for instance looks wayyyyyy better than any previous Sally that Butler drew. She’s still Butlerized compared to Yardley but not to remotely the same extent thankfully!
Also! Jamal Peppers killing it in the Knux/Espio story!
I love that Flynn is giving us a buuuunch of lore we’ve never had before, but unlike Ken Penders who lore-dumped flashbacks of 50 different Knuckles recolors talking to each other that you’ve been given no reason to care about across 5-7 pages per issue… Flynn leverages characters we’ve previously met — Monkey Khan & the Iron King/Queen, Espio, & Lightning Lynx — but given little background or fleshing out, one of which is a game character so that even if you haven’t been collecting all the Archie comics, you still have reason to care.
From there, he opens things up, but notice how this comic didn’t stop to tell us the lore of the Brides or the Clans or any of that? It’s giving it to us amidst action & other intrigue so we have a more natural introduction to all of the new stuff he’s introducing.
Also, Herms’ colors continue to elevate the comics a LOT.

I don’t got nothing against ray but I’m pretty sure he can’t just outright fly like tails can right? Or at least in the games he kinda had to zig zag idk it was weird (Ok this sonic and Sally thing is making me mad…the way she’s acting….I feel like she’s a player at this point)
