The IDW Sonic series is at the time after Team Sonic Racing. If it’s past Sonic Frontiers then they’ll make it very clear. If you don’t believe what I said I actually got this information from Evan Stanley herself.

frontiers hasn’t taken place yet at the point in time that the idw comics are currently taking place in, when they reach a point in time where frontiers has taken place, they’ll make it known, so rn everything is canon unless stated otherwise

It’s probably easier to say it happened afterwards. Alot happened during the start of the comics, and the only time they got a real break was after the metal virus.
Frontiers will probably “happen” eventually if they need to introduce elements from that game, but it will probably not be depicted in the comics.

I dunno, not to take away from Surge, but Scourge was awesome. I wonder what they would have done with him post genesis wave in archie if they had the time. The Scourge prison break Sonic Universe sequence remains one of the most creative universe sequences in my opinion. And what about Zonic? Did he ever come back, or is he canonically dead?

Keep in mind Scourge is Evil Sonic, so he knows all his skills, used the master emerald to get his colors, fought off a guardian, assembled a bootleg crew of everyone, went super…
Meanwhile, Surge has just survived being crushed, overpower, and just getting brainwashed and turned into a cyborg by Starline. (Just googled that).
I think Scourge has more experience with Sonic, but whatever you think, I don’t mind. I prefer Surge over Scourge anyway.
